History
The name „Kühtai“ was first mentioned in 1288: Chutay meant “Kuhalpe” (alpine pasture for cattle) and was a so called “Schwaighof” of the castle St. Petersberg in Silz. Archduke Leopold V. initiated the construction of a roadway from Sellrain in the time between 1623 and 1628. After that the farm was converted to a hunting lodge. Since the 30ies of the 19th century Kühtai has been visited by mountaineers and summer visitors. The hunting lodge was converted to a “castle hotel” at the end of the 19th century. After the 2nd world war Kühtai developed to a “hotel village” quickly and is a popular hiking- and skiing area nowadays.
